Plug-in vehicle sales in Europe reached 195,000 units in the first half of this year
Driven by environmental policy and consumer choice, the sale of electric vehicles is increasingly dramatically. Now comes the challenge to provide places for people to plug in. Engenie is looking to meet that demand.
Plug-in vehicle sales in Europe reached 195,000 units in the first half of this year - 42 % higher than in the corresponding period last year. Hybrid, plug-in hybrid and pure electric cars make up around 8% of the overall UK market and the numbers are set to rise inexorably.
Daimler-owned Mercedes has just unveiled its first fully-electric vehicle, while Porsche, Audi and Jaguar all lined-up to produce competing luxury models.
But no matter the car or what its price point is, every electric vehicle needs to plug into power on a regular basis and so the demand for charging stations is also set to grow exponentially.
Engenie is one of the providers in this sector and is already working with several partners to install rapid chargers. It has funding to install 1,500 rapid chargers with retail parks, pubs and restaurants among its principle location targets.
It offers a ‘no-cost’ service to landlords who have sites at busy destinations or en route sites near to main roads or in big towns and cities.
Engenie’s Richard Price explains: “A pleasant, safe area with cafes, shops and amenities is ideal for our chargers because electric car drivers stop to charge for anywhere between 20 and 60 minutes. This makes shopping centres and retail parks perfect.
“Installing chargers in places people want to spend time is really important to us and our partners, who benefit from both the footfall and charging revenue.”
Engenie was one of the brands appearing at the Completely Retail Marketplace. Price says: “I’m truly passionate about building the infrastructure to help people switch to an electric car and helping to improve the UK’s air quality. That was a lot to get across in three minutes, but it was great to step off the Soapbox into detailed discussions with landlords, retailers and agents”.
With the UK government having legislated a ban on petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040, the future is undoubtedly electric. The challenge now is establish the network of charging stations to make this possible.
